Meta Pixel Tracking in Mangobeds

3 min read

Meta Pixel tracking in Mangobeds sends what guests do on your booking form to Meta: every search, every room picked, every checkout started and every booking, with its amount. Meta uses it to report which Facebook and Instagram ads bring you bookings, and to show your ads to people more likely to book.

It is part of marketing tracking in Mangobeds, next to Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager.

What You Need

Your Meta Pixel ID. It is a number of about 15 or 16 digits. Find it in Meta Events Manager: open Data sources, pick your pixel, and the ID is shown under its name and in its Settings.

Setting Up Meta Pixel Tracking

Go to your property’s Apps section and open Marketing Tracking. Enter your Meta Pixel ID and click Connect. If the app is already connected for Google, open Settings, add the Pixel ID and click Save. Your booking form starts sending events right away.

Embedding the form on your website? Use the embed code from Mangobeds. The pixel then runs on your own website’s page, where browsers let it send, and the booking joins the visit that brought the guest in. If your website already has this pixel, Mangobeds uses it and does not load a second copy.

Pasted the pixel into your booking form’s custom HTML before? Remove it once the app is connected. Inside an embedded form it cannot send anything, and the app now covers it.

What Your Booking Form Sends to Meta

Mangobeds uses Meta’s standard events, so Meta knows what each one means without any custom conversions:

  • Search: Search when a guest searches dates, and ViewContent with the rooms that came up.
  • Picking a room or extra: AddToCart. Meta has no standard event for removing one, so nothing is sent then.
  • Starting checkout: InitiateCheckout when the guest reaches the details step.
  • Going to payment: AddPaymentInfo when the guest clicks Book on a booking paid online.
  • Booking: Purchase when the booking is created, just before the guest goes to the payment page.

Mangobeds sends no PageView and switches off Meta’s automatic events for this pixel, so it only receives the booking steps above. Your website’s own pixel setup keeps counting your pages.

What Each Event Includes

  • Booking amount (value) and currency (currency): rooms plus extras, minus any coupon, in your property’s currency. On Purchase it is the money the booking is worth.
  • Rooms and extras (content_ids, contents, num_items): the Mangobeds ids of the rooms and extras, with their quantities.
  • Stay (checkin_date, checkout_date, num_adults): the dates and number of guests, with content_type set to hotel, the travel parameters Meta uses for hotel ads.
  • Booking ID (event ID): on Purchase, so Meta never counts the same booking twice.

Optimise Your Meta Ads for Bookings

Create a campaign with the Sales objective, choose your website and this pixel, and pick Purchase as the conversion event. Because every purchase carries the booking amount, you can also optimise for the value of the bookings, not just their number.

Check That It Works

  • Go through your booking form: search dates, pick a room and reach the details step on the page where your form is embedded.
  • Look in Events Manager: open your pixel in Meta Events Manager and check that Search, AddToCart and InitiateCheckout come in. Meta can take a little while to show them.
  • Remember the steps: Purchase is only sent when a guest clicks Book. A guest who stops on the details step sends InitiateCheckout and nothing more, which is the drop-off you want to see.
